India will now compete for the bronze medal.
World champion Belgium won a place in the men’s hockey final of the Tokyo Olympics after beating India 5-2 on Tuesday, which provides a new opportunity for the 2016 Rio Olympic silver medalist to win a gold medal.
The Belgian team took the lead less than two minutes into the game and defender Loick Luypaert scored from a penalty kick.
Eight-time Olympic champions India won the highest award at the 1980 Moscow Olympics last time. They evened the score and soon took the lead with goals from Harman Pratt Singh and striker Mandip Singh.
But the Belgian team evened the score in another penalty corner from the top scorer defender Alexander Hendricks of the Tokyo Championship.
With 11 minutes left in the game, Hendricks lived up to expectations and scored his second goal at the penalty corner of the game, giving Belgium a 3-2 lead.
Hendricks wrapped a bandage on his head to protect the wound on his forehead, and then completed a hat-trick through a penalty kick, while veteran John-John Domen scored another goal for the Belgian team in the last minute.
Belgium will now face Australia or Germany in the gold medal match on Thursday, while India will compete for the bronze medal.
