Indian grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi has won the 28th Abu Dhabi Chess Masters, beating Spain’s David Anton Guijarro here today.
The 18-year-old beat the Spaniard by 7.5 points in the ninth and final round.
Erigaisi is also unbeaten in nine rounds, half a point ahead of Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov.
On the other hand, Sindarov beat Iran’s M Amin Tabatabaei to finish second.
Erigaisi, currently number three on the live ratings chart in India, has had an impressive recent performance, earning 35 Elo ratings following the recently concluded Chess Olympiad. In Abu Dhabi, Erigaisi has six victories and a draw in the other three to emerge as the clear winner in a field that includes multiple GMs from around the world.
His victories came from compatriots Rohit Krishna, Deep Sengupta, Raunak Sadhwani, top seeds Wang Hao, Alexsandar Indjic and Guijarro. He drew with Evgeny Tomashevsky, Jorden van Forest and Ray Robson.
General Manager Nihal Sarin, SP Sethuraman, Karthikeyan Murali and Aryan Chopra and FIDE Master Aditya Samant scored 6.5 points. Jorden van Foreest was third, followed by Ray Robson of the US, while Sarin was sixth, followed by Sethuraman, Samant, Murali and Chopra rounding out the top 10.
