Here are five profiles of NEP women graduates who helped shape the nation’s future
The National Expert Programme (NEP) develops talented Emirati professionals to play a leading role in the transformation of future growth sectors.
Launched in 2019 under the direction of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President, the NEP provides Emirati technical experts with skills to conduct research on 15 key social and economic sectors aligned with the UAE’s national priorities have a transformative impact.
A total of 46 Emiratis from various backgrounds have participated in the last two NEP editions. The third edition of the NEP will start in November, and the new cohort will be announced in October.
As the UAE celebrates Emirati Women’s Day, here are the profiles of five NEP female graduates who are helping to shape the future of the country.
Meera Al Mheiri, Senior Inspection Engineer, Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority
A second batch of NEP graduates, Meera Al Mheiri made history in 2015 when she became the first female UAE nuclear safety inspector at the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority. Meera has led a number of strategic projects to position the UAE in the nuclear sector and provide a framework in line with the UAE’s nuclear energy policy. She designed a policy framework to help identify gaps in the work system and provide solutions to address them.
During her career, she was a member of the Emirates Youth Council from 2016 to 2018 and is currently a board member of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, a role she has held since 2020.
Kalthoom Ali, Head of Middle East Education, Apple
Kalthoom Ali participated in the second batch of NEPs and has extensive experience in public and private education. Before joining Apple Middle East earlier this year, she was the former Director of Strategic Partnerships at GEMS and also worked at the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai, where she held various roles over 10 years, including as Executive Director of Education Dubai Private Development of all schools in the education sector.
Kalthoom sees a future where the personal educational journey is redesigned along a continuum of lifelong learning, where everyone acquires a variety of invaluable skills that become irreplaceable. Kalthoom is working to help key stakeholders in the industry enable teaching and learning through technology, and celebrate advancements in all types of learning, including academic, non-academic and soft skills.
Fatima Al Shamsi, Head of Space Policy and Legislation, UAE Space Agency
With the UAE becoming the first Arab country to reach Mars and announcing the first regional interplanetary mission to explore the asteroid belt, Fatima Al Shamsi is keen to help advance the nation’s expertise in space science into a new era.
A graduate of the second NEP cohort, Fatima now works at the UAE Space Agency, where she heads the space policy and legislative branch, and works with the UN Commission to advance international space policy and dialogue to identify global needs, legal frameworks for global space challenges and resources.
Maisa Al Qassimi, Acting Program Director, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, DCT – Abu Dhabi
Maisa Al Qassimi comes from a family that values ​​arts and culture, and she has been developing her knowledge and skills in this field over a career of more than 15 years. Passionate about museums from an early age, Maisa was nominated for the program’s second cohort and, now as acting program director at the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, is developing the same passion for the next generation of Emiratis. Completion in 2025.
Mariam Al Meraikhi, co-founder and CEO, Astrocloud Studios
As an inaugural participant and fellow in the program, Mariam is a strong storyteller and communicator with extensive experience in the media industry. Before co-founding AstroCloud Studios to support creative industries in the UAE and the region, she worked for several leading organisations including Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company and ExCel London.
