Impressive Indian contingent
Indian players have excelled at the Abu Dhabi Masters, taking six of the top 10 spots. A total of five Indians were given the norm. Besides Aditya Samant, IM P Shyam Nikhil is the only IM to make the top 25. Shyam finished 21st with a 6/9. He’s just one GM spec away from being India’s next guru.
Arjun Erigaisi won the final round against David Anton to take first place. He played with the sole purpose of winning the game because he was maneuvering until his opponent broke and made a mistake. Javokhir Sindarov and Jorden van Foreest finished second and third with 7/9 and 6½/9 points respectively.
The eventual champion, 18-year-old Arjun, opted for the swap variant against Anton’s Caro-Kann defense.
Arjun’s knight is stronger than Black’s bishop due to the almost grid-locked pawn structure. White slowly moves his king to a3 and starts rearranging his pieces to find the best square and the best plan.
Black decides to give up the f5 pawn because it doesn’t make much of a difference.It’s more important to control the h file, so 43…Qh8 Prevent Rh1 from appearing immediately.the game continues 44.Nxf5+ Bxf5 45.Qxh5 Qh3 46.Qd3 Qg2 47.Re1 Qf2 48.Re3 Qg1 49.Ne1 Prevent all possibilities of the Queen’s invasion by the Queen’s side.
Eventually black collapsed: 63…Kf8 64.c6+- Rc4 65.Qb2 Rxa4+?? 66.Rxa4 Qxa4+ 67.Qa3+. Black resigns, as the resulting pawn ends up entirely for White. Thus, Arjun Erigaisi won the tournament to become the champion of the 28th Abu Dhabi Masters.

A total of 148 players from 31 countries participated, including 43 GMs, 35 IMs, 7 WGMs and 3 WIMs. The tournament was organised by the Abu Dhabi Chess Club and Mind Games from 17th to 25th August. The 9 rounds of the Swiss Championship are timed at 90 minutes plus 30 second increments from the first step.
