Emirates News Agency – MoCCAE launches UAE Climate Responsibility Company Commitment

DUBAI, 29th August, 2022 (WAM) — The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, MoCCAE, today launched the UAE Climate Responsible Company Commitment.

The pledge aims to increase private sector participation in the country’s decarbonization drive, in line with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative.

This commitment forms the basis for future collaborations between the private sector, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and international organisations, including the Emirates Nature Fund, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), which is the A committed strategic implementing partner to support private sector entities in the implementation of their net zero initiatives.

The launch is part of the fourth phase of the National Dialogue on Climate Ambition (NDCA), which aims to build a national culture of sustainable development and highlight the country’s efforts to achieve climate neutrality. The theme of the fourth NDCA is “Roadmap to Net Zero in the Hospitality Industry”.

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said: “We are delighted to launch the UAE Climate Accountability Corporation Commitment, and there is no better place than the NDCA, where we have built rapport with all sectors to support their climate ambitions and transform them into become an active partner in our net zero drive. This commitment will help our UAE government engage with entities keen to make a positive contribution to our climate neutrality movement and align their efforts towards our shared goals. I invite all companies Show that they care about their impact on our climate by signing the UAE Climate Responsibility Corporation Pledge and are ready and willing to translate their commitments into action.

The event saw 21 companies from key industries including cement, aluminium and steel join the pledge, including BEEAH, Emerson, Emirates Nature-WWF, Majid Al Futtaim Group, Standard Chartered, HSBC, Masdar, Emirates Global Aluminium Industry, Emirates Steel Arkan Group, Aldar Properties, Emirates Environmental Group, Strata, Al Yah Satellite Communications Company (Yahsat), Chalhoub Group, Pure Harvest, AESG, Taka Solutions, Lafarge Emirates Cement, EY, EV Lab and TotalEnergies.

The companies pledged to strengthen collective efforts to combat climate change by transparently measuring and reporting their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, drafting ambitious scientific plans to reduce their carbon footprints and sharing these plans with the UAE government to help achieve National net-zero emissions target by 2050.

The signatories also committed to adopting climate change mitigation and adaptation as core values ​​and principles of their business and operating models, and to take an inclusive approach that involves youth, women and socially disadvantaged groups in the drafting of their net-zero emissions plans.

The launch of the pledge is part of MoCCAE’s initiative to scale up climate action in the UAE, in response to the call for the Glasgow Climate Pact, the outcome of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), for countries to adopt higher greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Arrange goals.

The enthusiasm with which companies signed the pledge reflects private sector entities’ awareness of the serious threat posed by climate change and its adverse impacts on the environment, food security, water security and public health.
