Bloomington, IL (WMBD) — The City of Bloomington is narrowing its candidates for entertainment and arts director.
City deputy manager Billy Tyus said city staff hoped the role would bring new life to the city’s stage and performing arts center.
Two years ago, the city terminated its agreement with the third-party management company that ran the arena. Since then, it has been the responsibility of city staff to bring in performances at the Grossinger Auto Arena and the Bloomington Center for the Performing Arts.
Tyus said the city has integrated the operational aspects into the city’s responsibilities and is creating a new department focused on entertainment.
In the years since it was built, the arena has been losing money. Tyus says it’s no secret, but as far as he knows, most venues and venues across the country are in some sort of loss-making state.
“The profit and loss of the arena or BCPA is not the only way to measure whether these buildings are important to our community. The people who come to the show also eat at local restaurants, they buy gas at the local gas station, they stay at the local hotel, Shop at your local store,” Tyus said.
Currently, the arena does not have any major performance plans, but it still hosts IIHSA state competitions for wrestling and cheerleading. It will also be home to the Saturday farmers market once the weather turns cooler.
BCPA, on the other hand, appears to have a full season of shows, including trumpeter Rodney Marsalis next month, Johnny Cash tribute show in October, and Sara Evans in October.
