Satyajit Ray’s Agantuk to present world news at Toronto Film Festival

[ad_1]

Toronto: Less than a month after hosting a retrospective of the legendary Indian filmmaker’s work, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will present Satyajit Rai’s final production, Forrest Gump, at its main event. Tucker or The Stranger.

As part of the Cinametheque segment, Agantuk will be screened as part of the 2022 11-day film festival, which begins on September 8. The screening will also mark the world premiere of a 4K or high-quality digital restoration of the original film, originally released in 1991. This edition is provided to TIFF by the National Film Development Corporation of India and the National Film Archive of India.

“Agantouk is an important film in Ray’s oeuvre, and one he is proud of. We hope it will appeal to audiences who are less familiar with Ray’s work, as well as become a source of many people who come to enjoy A treat for TIFF viewers of the recent series,” TIFF Film Center Manager Jessica Smith told The Hindustan Times via email.

The most recent exhibition, Satyajit Ray: His Contemporaries and Legacy, opened in August and consists of 10 films, including four of Ray’s films. It opens with Charulata, which was released in 1964. Smith said it was “designed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence” and that the franchise could not be restored.

The TIFF Cinematheque section of the festival will showcase five classics, including Agantuk. Also listed are the stories of Mary Harron’s I Shot Andy Warhol, Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom, Béla Tarr and Ágnes Hranitzky’s Werckmeister Harmonies, and Guy Maddin from Gimli Hospital Redux.

Agantook was described by TIFF as a “very personal final film”.

“Satyajit Ray’s last film is considered the director’s most philosophical, intellectual and personal work. Ray fans might deduce that the protagonist’s point of view is actually Ray speaking his mind … Ray’s in-depth study of human behavior is most prominent here,” it noted.

Ray, who made his debut with Pather Panchali in 1955, died in Calcutta in 1992, less than a month after receiving an honorary Oscar.
