From next week, students in grades 5 to 12 in UAE public schools will have the option to wear the traditional Emirati kandura instead of their school uniform.
However, starting from the new semester next year, the national uniform will become a mandatory uniform for male students.
The announcement was issued by the UAE Schools Agency.
“male [pupils] Students in fifth grade and above may choose to wear ethnic dress upon investigation and guardian’s request,” the school regulator said.
In addition to kandura, students can also wear a headscarf, called a ghutra.
Previously, students in public schools could wear kandura on campus until the Ministry of Education introduced school uniforms in 2019.
The old rules mandated that all students in public schools across the country wear a standardized uniform, offered at a fixed price, to ease the financial burden on parents.
Sarah AmiriMinister of State for Public Education and Future Technologies and Chairman of the UAE School Agency, said the new order on national dress was issued following many requests from parents.
“At the request and wishes of the parents, men’s national dress [pupils] exist [years 5 to 12] would be an option,” she said.
“Working together with parents will deliver on our government’s vision in this area.”
Last month, ESE announced that all students in UAE public schools will be required to purchase new uniforms at the start of the school year.
From ages 9 to 12, boys not wearing kandura should wear a formal white shirt (long or short sleeves) and dark blue pants.
The tracksuit consists of a white and dark blue T-shirt and dark blue sweatpants.
Girls’ uniforms have also been updated to white shirts and trousers. After the update, the tie on the uniform was removed.
