Low carbon ammonia transportation

The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has sent its first shipment of low-carbon ammonia to Hamburg, Germany.

This is the first low-carbon ammonia shipment to Germany and will be delivered to Hamburg-based Aurubis, a global supplier of non-ferrous metals and one of the world’s largest copper recyclers. Upon arrival in Germany, Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA) will handle the shipment.

The demonstration cargo, produced by ADNOC and OCI’s partner Fertiglobe, is the first of several test cargoes sold to German customers by ADNOC following an expanded partnership across the hydrogen value chain. Aurubis plans to use low-carbon ammonia as a feedstock at its wire plant to test its application as a low-carbon energy source for industrial use, the company said in a statement.

Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, said: “This low carbon ammonia demonstration cargo builds on the longstanding bilateral relationship between the UAE and Germany and our growing presence in the clean energy sector. The foundation of partnership. Vitality.

“Our collaboration with German customers also highlights ADNOC’s ambitious growth plans for clean hydrogen production, as well as carrier fuels such as ammonia, which will play a key role in decarbonizing hard-to-abate industrial sectors. We are committed to accelerating and deepening private and Public sector collaboration on clean hydrogen projects to reduce carbon emissions and the carbon intensity of the energy that supports our daily lives.”

Roland Harings, CEO of Aurubis, said: “As the world’s most efficient and sustainable network of smelters, Aurubis provides metals that are critical to megatrends such as renewable energy, electric vehicles and digitalisation, as well as megatrends such as decarbonisation. Stable processes at our plants, we are expanding our reliable energy portfolio, thereby simultaneously investing in the decarbonisation of our production. ADNOC’s first low carbon ammonia trials represent an important milestone in our long-term vision for hydrogen solutions, This will help achieve our decarbonization goals.”

“I very much welcome the leadership of our international and national partners in business and ports in these real-world decarbonization industry trials. We need these real-world discoveries and commitments to support the development of a green hydrogen economy. Hamburg as industry The base and the European distribution port are the blueprint for this transformation and are therefore a focus for Germany,” added HE Michael Westhagemann, Senator for Economy and Innovation in Hamburg.

The shipment follows some low-carbon ammonia sales to customers in Asia. Last year, ADNOC said it would send the first batch of blue ammonia to Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation for use in fertilizer production.

ADNOC plans to increase its hydrogen production to supply up to 25% of imported hydrogen in key global markets. Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy projects import demand for clean hydrogen of around 3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2030 and 15 mtpa by 2050.
