The UCI organization is the International Cycling Union. The group works to raise the profile of cycling, develop cycling skills at all levels, from children to professionals, and collaborate with like-minded organizations and cities.
Earning the UCI Bike City label is a recognition of investment in cycling at all levels. It is only available to cities and regions that host professional cycling events and are committed to promoting recreational and commuter cycling. Significant investment in cycling infrastructure is required.
Abu Dhabi joins an elite group of world-renowned cycling cities. These include Paris, Bergen, Glasgow, Vancouver and the Yorkshire region of England.
What is the Abu Dhabi Cycling Initiative?
To celebrate receiving the UCI Bike City label, the Abu Dhabi government has launched the Cycling Abu Dhabi initiative.
Bike Abu Dhabi is a platform to support and showcase cycling. With the motto “The track is your city and your city is the track”, @bikeabudhabi aims to inform and empower urban cyclists and those considering taking part in the sport.

1. Careem Bikes
Careem BIKE is the first bike sharing scheme of its kind in the UAE. The program aims to get as many people as possible using bicycles in a simple, cost-effective way.
Eighty Careem bike stations are located throughout the city and at several convenient locations. A total of 800 bicycles are available for short-term visitors and local residents at different stations.
Careem BIKES are pedal assisted, which means they use an electric motor. They are also easily adjustable, making them suitable for adult riders of all ages and mobility levels.
To get started, you need to download the Careem BIKE app and select membership. You can join a day, a week, a month, or a year. If you are a resident and intend to use the program regularly, the annual membership fee is preferably AED 2 per day.
After becoming a member, you will get a QR code. Use it to use any bike available at any Careem BIKE location. Once you ride away, the bike will be yours within 45 minutes and can be shipped to any other Careem BIKE location. However, during the membership period, you are free to ride for 45 minutes.
The Careem BIKE has proven to be very popular for making quick hops around town, commuting from the subway station to the office, short recreational rides, and countless other reasons.
2. Abu Dhabi Ring Road
This is a newly designated bike lane that will eventually wrap around the city. It will conveniently connect major destinations for residents, tourists and commuters.
With a total length of 109 kilometers, the Abu Dhabi Circle will extend the current cycling network to over 300 kilometers. When further expansion is expected in the future, the total length of the network will eventually reach more than 1,000 kilometers.
Abu Dhabi Ring Road is a bicycle Abu Dhabi initiative by the Abu Dhabi government. It aims to encourage Abu Dhabi citizens to lead healthier lifestyles and improve mobility in the city. 3. Velodrome Hudayriyat and Hudayriyat Island
Velodrome Hudayriyat will be a new 3,500 spectator venue dedicated to track cycling events.
Velodrome Hudayriyat will be located on Hudayriyat Island, an already popular entertainment and leisure destination. It includes a sports village and several cycling facilities. The BMX track is part of Circuit X, Abu Dhabi’s outdoor adventure hub.
Nearby is the Hudayriyat Bike Park with 3 recreational trails.
The interior trails are great for beginners and great for introducing kids to the joys of cycling. Intermediate trails offer a longer, scenic route for more experienced cyclists. The final track at Hudayriyat is a thrill-seeking dirt track for the most adventurous and experienced cyclists.
4. Al Wathba Cycle Path and More Recreational Cycling Opportunities
Just a 40-minute drive from Abu Dhabi, the city is easily accessible and cyclists can cycle through stunning desert scenery. The track covers miles of desert and you can choose from a variety of loops between 8km and 30km to suit all abilities.
The Al Wathba Cycle Path is open 24 hours a day, so you can time your time during a spectacular desert sunrise or sunset. It is also an ideal destination for cyclists as bike rentals are available here, including bikes for children.
In addition, the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island regularly hosts opportunities Ride on the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix track.
5. Professional cycling events
2022 has already seen an incredible and successful professional cycling event – the Tour of the Emirates.
The seven-day event includes four flat stages, one through Abu Dhabi, a time trial and two mountain stages. The event was dominated by the UAE Sheikhs, who beat Olympic-standard cyclists from around the world. However, more professional cycling events are already lining up as part of the Abu Dhabi Cycling initiative.
First up is the Al Ain Classic, a one-day amateur cycling event that will take place later in 2022.
The UCI Urban Cycling World Championships will also be held in Abu Dhabi in 2022 and 2024. In 2028, the UCI Gryffindor World Championships are also planned for Abu Dhabi.
