Dubai, United Arab Emirates – A small plane crashed in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Wednesday, injuring the pilot but no other casualties, police said.
Police said the glider did not land at the private jet airport in the capital, but crashed into the parking lot of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi. They blamed a “technical malfunction” for the crash of the single-engine, fixed-wing Cessna Caravan.
Police added that the pilot was being treated for minor injuries, but did not say if there were other passengers. The extent of damage to the crash site in the UAE capital remains unclear.
The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority said it will continue to investigate the cause of the technical glitch. Authorities warned the public to “refrain from spreading rumours about this incident.” In the authoritarian country, where information is tightly controlled, there are severe penalties for sharing videos or content that could damage the UAE’s reputation as a safe haven in a troubled region.
The country’s last major aircraft accident occurred in May 2019, when a small plane involved in upgrading the runway at Dubai International Airport crashed into a park, killing four people and disrupting traffic at the world’s busiest airport for international travel.
