Experts advise motorists to follow guidelines specified by automakers

The price difference between Special 95 and Super 98 petrol in the UAE in September is just 11 fils, and many residents may be tempted to opt for higher octane fuels for their vehicles. However, industry experts strictly recommend that motorists use the fuel as specified in the owner’s manual. Super 98 petrol was priced at AED 3.41 this month, while Specialty 95 petrol was priced at AED 3.30.
Fuel prices were cut by 62 fils a litre this month, in line with global prices. This is the second month in a row that the UAE has lowered retail fuel prices. In August, the price was reduced by 60 fils per liter.
Galadari Automobiles technical training manager Sujumon Sujathan said the main difference between the two fuels is the engine’s resistance to knocking, the thumping sound that occurs when the gasoline inside cannot resist the high pressure and accidentally burns. .
“We offer three fuels in the UAE, E plus, Super 95 and Special 98, and users should strictly adhere to the grade specified in the owner’s manual because the engine is designed for that grade,” Sujathan said.
“Using a higher octane fuel won’t do any good, but in the long run, using the lower octane gasoline specified by the manufacturer may have complications,” Sujathan added.
Experts say the engine can suffer serious damage over time if knocking occurs repeatedly.
It is widely believed that gasoline with a higher octane rating will provide high power in a car, “but not for a car designed for 95-octane fuel,” Sujathan explained.
High-performance cars built for speed typically run on fuel with an octane rating of 98 or higher. “Premium petrol doesn’t give more power because power depends on the engine,” he added.
According to Sony Rajappan, senior service consultant at Star Auto Garage in Al Quoz, Super 98 fuel is suitable for high-powered, high-performance vehicles. It also keeps the injectors clean. “Special 98 fuel is denser and contains additives. It is designed for high performance engines. The sprayers and injectors are perfect for the engine specified by the manufacturer,” Rajappan said.
“Premium fuels are produced for high-end or luxury cars and vehicles with the latest technology. Commercial vehicles such as pickups and buses are designed for e-plus or 91-octane fuel,” Rajappan said.
Using an incorrect fuel grade can cause the following problems:
- engine overheating
- increased engine pressure
- mechanical injury
- Pollution
- No increase in fuel economy
- Environmental hazards
- High maintenance cost
