Islamabad [Pakistan]September 4 (ANI): Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif on Saturday announced that the PM Disaster Relief Fund will be audited by the General Authority of Pakistan (AGPR) and a private audit firm to ensure transparency.

He also announced that the audit report would be made public, Geo News reported. The Prime Minister tweeted that the decision was taken because of his commitment to ensuring transparency.

“In line with my commitment to ensuring transparency, the government has decided to have the PM Flood Relief Fund audited by AGPR and a globally renowned private audit firm. They will audit all incoming and outgoing funds, including where and how the funds are used. The audit report will be made public ,” Shehbaz tweeted.

Shehbaz set up a relief fund last month to help people affected by the floods and called on the public to donate, Geo News reported.

He also thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for increasing China’s aid to the affected people from the initial 100 million yuan to 400 million yuan.

“I am very grateful to President Xi Jinping for the RMB 400 million aid package for flood victims in Pakistan, which has been increased from RMB 100 million to RMB 400 million. It reflects our unique bond of friendship. This support will help provide a lot of – People need relief,” Pakistan’s prime minister tweeted.

Earlier today, after deadly floods killed more than 1,200 people and destroyed millions of homes, Pakistan vowed to return to “normality” and provide relief to those affected, Geo News reported.

At a press conference at the National Flood Response and Coordination Centre, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal called on the international community to support Pakistan and assured the country that, with the support of its staff, the government would “leave no stone unturned” in order to recover as soon as possible normal.

The planning minister also called on the international community to ensure that their resolve to support Pakistan is not deterred, as the scale of the disaster requires a major humanitarian response, Geo News reported.

The toll from catastrophic flooding in Pakistan continued to climb Saturday, with another 29 dead, 25 of them children, as the country grapples with rescue and relief operations on an unprecedented scale, ARY News reported.

A high-level body set up to coordinate relief efforts, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif, met for the first time in Islamabad on Saturday to assess the disaster.

Flooding from record monsoon rains and melting glaciers in the northern mountains has affected 33 million people and killed at least 1,290 people, including 441 children. Floods blamed on climate change are still spreading.

Initial estimates put the damage at $10 billion, but investigations are still ongoing with international organizations. (ANI)
