A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck a mountainous area in western Sichuan province in China just after noon on Monday, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

The epicentre was in the town of Luding at a depth of 16 kilometers, about 180 kilometers (111 miles) southwest of Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, the center said.

Netizens from as far away as Changsha and Xi’an all said that there was an earthquake in Sichuan.

A second earthquake of magnitude 4.2 struck the city of Ya’an, near Luding, minutes later, according to the center.

No casualties have been reported so far.

In 2013, a powerful earthquake struck Ya’an, killing more than 100 people and injuring thousands.
