A Ugandan national who came to the UAE in search of work has drowned on the Corniche beach in Abu Dhabi.
Joel Kamoga, also known as Morgan, drowned last Wednesday while going for a beach swim with friends.
The 25-year-old, who had only been in Abu Dhabi for two months, came to the UAE on a visitor visa to find work so he could look after his family at home, including his mother and younger siblings. Unfortunately, he passed away before his dream could come true.
The Ugandan embassy in Abu Dhabi confirmed Kamoga’s death and, after receiving a death certificate from the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Health, has provided relatives with the documents needed for the repatriation process.
The family is coordinating with the Ugandan community in Abu Dhabi and efforts are currently underway to return his body.
The deceased’s brother, Godfrey Ziwa, told Khaleej Times that Kamoga went to the beach with his friends around 8am and left him in their accommodation room. The room is located on Electra Street in Abu Dhabi.
“He was out swimming with some of our roommates. I was shocked when I learned the sad news from a friend who said Morgan may have drowned in the water with the man who rushed over, police Need his passport,” he said.
“I couldn’t believe it. We later received confirmation from the police that he was dead.”
Zwa said his brother’s sudden death came as a shock to the family at home.
“Our mother was devastated when we informed her of her son’s death. She is still trying to recover,” Ziwa said, adding that Kamoga had called his mother two days before his death and reassured her that he would soon be would find a job and take care of the needs of her and his little siblings.
“But that never happened. He was such a happy and kind man and everyone in the family loved him,” he said.
With the help of the Ugandan community in Abu Dhabi, Kamoga’s body was apparently kept as a family member in a morgue at the Baniyas cemetery, and their embassy is arranging for a repatriation.
“We have obtained most of the required documents and his body will be flown back to Uganda on Thursday morning,” said community member Aziz Nsubuga, who has been helping the deceased’s family raise funds for the repatriation process and find official documents. required.
Abu Dhabi Uganda Community Vice President Ronald Ssenyonjo, who has been involved in mobilizing community members to help the family, said: “I would like to thank all those who made donations to ensure our brother’s body was brought home and buried. His family is truly grateful .”
Kamo is passionate about football and has been playing for a Ugandan football team in Abu Dhabi.
“Morgan was new to the Ugandan community in Abu Dhabi, but he was very friendly and social. He loved football and could entertain everyone on the pitch,” said George Koya, manager of the football team the deceased played for.
“His death is a great loss to the Emirati family and the Ugandan community. We will always miss him.”
