Much of the southern Indian city of Bengaluru was flooded on Tuesday as two days of torrential rain caused widespread power outages, flooding houses and inundating roads.

With several areas of the city still severely flooded, videos on social media showed people jumping on tractors to work.

Many schools were closed on Monday and authorities warned of water disruptions. Boats were deployed to rescue people from the flood.

The city known as India’s tech capital, formerly known as Bangalore, is home to a number of tech companies that have flooded many of their offices, prompting employees to work from home.

Although September is usually the wettest month in Bangalore, this year has seen more rainfall than usual.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the southern state of Karnataka, where Bengaluru is located, has seen one of the heaviest rainfall this year.

The past three months have seen 34% more rainfall than this time of year.

While there is no direct link between Bangalore’s excess rainfall and climate change, there is growing evidence that the monsoon, the most important weather system in the Indian subcontinent, is changing due to climate change.

Scientists say this makes extreme events such as excessive rainfall the new normal.
