The Duchess of Sussex sees the reaction to her relationship with Prince Harry as “prototype”.
The 41-year-old duchess was told she was “lucky” to date Harry in 2016 – but the 37-year-old prince rejected claims of “gendering” and “stereotypes”.
On the latest episode of the ‘Archetype’ podcast, the Duchess told her showbiz friend Mindy Kaling: “When I started dating my husband, when we got engaged, everyone said, ‘Oh my God, you Luckily, he chose you.’ At some point, after you’ve listened to it a million times, you’re like, ‘Well, I chose him too’.
“But thankfully, I have a partner who counters that for me and says, ‘They’re all wrong. I’m lucky because you chose me.’ But it’s gendered, it’s archetypal , it’s the stereotype, ‘you’re lucky,’ and it just fuels the idea that you’re waiting for someone to tell you that you’re good enough, rather than knowing that you’re alone is enough.”
The Duchess – Archie, three, with Lilibet and Harry, 15 months – has also admitted wanting to live a “cookie-cutter perfect life” when she was younger.
The former Suits star explained: “My parents split up around the age of two or three and I always wanted this cookie-cutter perfect life.
“You look at that, like a boy in a letterman jacket, and I romanticized it. It’s all part of what gets you thinking about what kind of life you want to have when you grow up.
“But I kept thinking, ‘I’m more Betty than Veronica,’ will I get that one day, I’m smart and not pretty.”
