Kinship to headline entertainment at Wisconsin Leadership Summit

The rhythm and soul will pick up when the Professional Development Conference wraps up on the first day of the Wisconsin Leadership Summit on October 10th.

Madison-based R&B and soul band Kinfolk will take the stage and entertain attendees at its fifth annual event. Organizers from Madison365, which hosts and produces the summit, are hosting their first live summit since 2019 with the theme “Family Reunion,” which is exactly what the band hopes to achieve.

“It’s just family, relatives,” bassist and co-founder Corey Saffold said. “It’s getting together with close family, friends, and having a good time. That’s what the band stands for.”

The band originated at the Fountain of Life Church on Madison’s south side. Saffold, Dr. LaVar Charlston, Anthony Ward and Marcus Fleming were all church musicians. Each of them was regularly asked to perform at weddings and other events, and over time it became apparent that they had something special.

Nearly 15 years later, with the help of several musicians from Milwaukee, the band holds shows in the Madison area about once a month at Live on King Street, Dane Dances, and other local festivals and venues. After a nearly two-year hiatus during the pandemic, things have gotten better, with the band now hosting multiple shows each month.

“As the pandemic has eased … people have been coming back. It was back this summer,” Safford said.

Most of their gigs consist of covers mixed with a handful of original songs. They’ve released two songs — “Easily” and “Waiting in Vain” — across all music streaming platforms — and have two more coming soon. Saffold said they hope to do more shows in the area, playing regularly in Fox Valley, with an eye toward Milwaukee and Chicago.

You can watch Kinfolk for free on Friday nights at Mad Lit concerts on the 100th block of State Street in downtown Madison from 8-11pm.Registration is now open for the Wisconsin Leaders Summit at https://wisconsinleadershipsummit.com.
