Burjeel Medical City has now started kidney transplants, offering patients the option of undergoing surgery in private hospitals in the UAE capital.

The first such transplant was successfully performed in a hospital in the city of Mohammed bin Zayed for a patient from Kazakhstan whose kidney donor was his family.

Donor surgery, called a nephrectomy, is performed using the latest 3D laparoscopic technology; a minimally invasive method designed to improve donor safety. It took four hours and then the recipient surgery, which was also done and done in four hours.

Both the patient and the donor are recovering well, according to the medical team.

Doctors say kidney disease is one of the top ten causes of death. Diabetes, hypertension, glomerulonephritis, medication, environment and lifestyle related diseases are all major causes of kidney failure.
