Etihad Rail has announced the completion of the connection between the rail freight station at Abu Dhabi Industrial City (ICAD), the largest inland freight rail station in the country, and the UAE national rail network.
Wham News Agency reported that the company had completed the laying and successful testing of the new line, which stretches from the Saudi Arabian border to the port of Fujairah on the east coast, passing through major manufacturing centers and urban centers.
This achievement is in line with the goals of the Emirates Rail Initiative, the largest integrated system for the transportation of goods and passengers in the country. The plan aims to connect the country’s major industrial and production centers, open new trade routes and facilitate population mobility.
Upon completion of the second phase of the UAE’s national rail network, Etihad Rail will provide logistics solutions through a rail hub in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s Industrial City, a hub for emerging industrial companies in the region.

Etihad Rail is building ICAD’s largest inland rail freight terminal in the UAE, spanning over 2.7 million square feet. The new rail freight station will include more than 22 buildings and major structures to support operations, handling up to nine trains per day.
It will facilitate the distribution of goods between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the UAE, connecting quarries in the northern emirate and industrial hubs in the Mussafah region, in addition to connecting Ruwais, Khalifa Port and container companies. The rail freight station will serve as a logistics hub for heavy industry, providing manufacturers with seamless distribution of raw materials and machinery, while facilitating better connections to vital trade infrastructure such as ports. The new rail freight station, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, will provide businesses with a range of competitive advantages, the highest level of efficiency in terms of transport costs and sustainability. When fully operational, the ICAD rail freight station will create a more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable transport capacity, handling more than 15 million tons of bulk raw materials, 1.5 tons of general cargo and approximately 116,600 20-foot containers per year.
The development of the ICAD Rail Cargo Terminal is part of the second phase of the UAE’s national rail network. This historic project stretches from Al on the Saudi Arabian border to the emirate of Fujairah on the east coast. When complete, the second phase of the GCC rail network will integrate the country’s ports, manufacturing centres and urban centres.
