Dubai Duty Free saw a 104% increase in sales in the first eight months of 2022 to a turnover of $1.06 billion, putting the business on track to hit a target of $1.6 billion by the end of the year.
Fragrances, wine, gold, cigarettes and tobacco and electronics maintained the top five positions, with fragrances growing 89% to $186 million, while alcohol, which accounted for 16% of total sales, reached $168 million.
Gold sales were up 181% over the same period last year, with sales reaching $106 million. Cigarettes and tobacco reached $98 million, or 9 percent of sales, while electronics grew 79 percent to $81 million.
Another notable increase was in the fashion category, from $41 to $130 million. This growth can be attributed to the recent opening of Dubai Duty Free by well-known fashion brands including Louis Vuitton, Dior and Cartier. Along with Chanel and Gucci, they are now among the top five luxury brands in Dubai Duty Free.
Meanwhile, online sales reached $29 million, or 3% of total sales in the first eight months.
Commenting on the current sales situation, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Duty Free, said: “We have had a great year so far and I am delighted that we have recovered more than 80% from January to August. business, and passenger recovery rates are about 67% of 2019 levels. We have now recalled nearly 2,000 laid-off employees, and our current staffing levels are getting closer to pre-pandemic numbers.”

DXB and AMIA departure sales, which accounted for 88% of total sales, were up 115% year over year to $927 million, while Terminal 2 departure sales were up 59%. Meanwhile, sales in all lobbies recorded significant growth, with overall sales in Lobby B up 35% from last year, largely thanks to luxury boutiques.
Dubai Duty Free will continue to focus on its retail improvements over the next 18 months, including a complete refurbishment of alcohol and tobacco products in Concourse B.
Meanwhile, re-employment and hiring at Dubai Duty Free continued to bring the workforce to 4,407, including 58 new UAE employees. – arab trade news agency
