Gopal Rochiram Chimnani, the founder of Rochiram & Sons Ltd, came to the UAE in 1969 and came to the UAE at the age of 19, except for the UAE.

“I remember that day I jumped on a cargo ship from India and came to the UAE to be with my father. It was in the late 1960s. I came with a pocket full of dreams. Five years later, I cherish all aspects of my life. Success: family, career, friends, life.”

Gopal’s father is an Indian national and came to Dubai in the early 1960s as a textile trader. After Gopal finished his school education, his father asked him about his further studies, but he was not interested in investing time to gain academic strength. Instead, Gopal asked his father to allow him to go to Dubai with him.

“At the time, the British Council in India gave visas, but many people chose another route to Dubai and Sharjah via cargo ships. There are three ships: Dumra, Dwarka and Siddar, which come from the big city of Mumbai in western India (the old name of Mumbai) ). I took Dwarka. These ships passed through Pakistan and Muscat and took four to five days to arrive. We slept in the sandpit, loaded and unloaded goods at the first stop in Pakistan, and we got some food. After that, we set sail again. There was no dock in Dubai at the time. When we arrived near the waters of Dubai, we were asked to change boats. I remember I paid 10 Dirhams for the launch boat that eventually took me to the coast of Dubai,” Ge Pal said.

In Dubai, his first job was as a sales executive in an entertainment company. Soon after, his father obtained a business license in Sharjah and asked Gopal to be responsible. This is the beginning of a golden journey. Gopal founded Rochiram & Sons Ltd in Sharjah and opened a supermarket specializing in Indian and Pakistani merchandise. “At the time, supermarkets had two brands: Spinneys and KM Trading. Both mainly catered to European products. There were also Mohanlal and Tulsidas Lalchand, as well as some wholesalers from Iran. Companies such as Choithrams and Lals later entered the market. We soon won. I gained popularity and began to attract customers from all the northern emirates and Dubai. I started doing business hoping to make millions in 35-40 years, and then retire around 60 years old. But in just 20 years, I did It’s much more than that. By the age of 42, I surpassed my goal and retired,” Gopal said.

Gopal and his two sons now run the home linen business and supply home linen products to companies and large supermarkets in different countries. “I have two sons, one manages our business in the UAE and the other in India,” he said.

Speaking of the rise of the UAE and why he called it a land full of opportunities, Gopal said: “The UAE is a beautiful and ambitious country. What makes it so successful today is its local population. The Emirati is honest and full of opportunities. Warmth and love. They opened the door to many foreigners like me, supporting and treating us with the utmost respect. Thanks to the support of local residents, individuals and families like me have flourished with the development of the UAE,” Gopal Added.

Comparing life in the 1960s and 1970s with the present, Gopal said: “Life is beautiful; those days were golden times. Money is valuable. People have love and warmth. At that time, there were few Indians in the UAE and there were many business opportunities. The rent is very cheap. We spend $100 a month to buy an apartment. The monthly electricity bill is fixed. There is no air conditioning and no refrigerator. At night, we are used to sleeping on the beach because it is nice and cold. In the past, Dubai and Sharjah It takes a few minutes to drive between, and you can walk. I remember one time from Sharjah to Dubai along the beach walk. I think it took me about an hour,” Gopal said, adding that the UAE is a paradise.

“I don’t feel the same anywhere else in the world. When I landed at Dubai Airport, I felt like I was home. This country gave me everything-a peaceful life, prosperity, and the opportunity to achieve my dreams and goals. , To support my family, to see my children thrive. What more can I ask for.”

Regarding doing business in the UAE, Gopal said: “The UAE provides a very conducive environment for people to grow. The law is very straightforward and supports the ease of doing business. Anyone who really desires to work and make money must simply work and follow the rules. You can enjoy life like a king. The society is kind and you can be sure of the support provided by the locals. This country has given us everything.”

He said that at the age of 71, Gopal would not experience this journey in any other way. “I enjoy my work life here, and now I am enjoying my retirement life. I live day by day.”
