Lee Jung-jae made history by winning an Emmy on Monday (12.09.22).
The ‘Squid Game’ actor became the first South Korean actor to win Best Actor in a Drama Series and the first Asian American thanks to his role in the Netflix series that saw him beat ‘Succession’ Brian Cox was honored with Jeremy Strong, Jason Bateman (‘Ozark’), Bob Odenkirk (‘Better Call Saul’) and Adam Scott (‘Severance’).
Accepting the award on stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, Lee said: “Thank you very much, thank you very much. First of all, I want to thank God above. Thank you Television Academy.
“Thank you to Netflix, to the director for bringing the real-world issues we all face to life so creatively on screen with a great script and stunning visuals. Thank you. Thank you to the ‘Squid Game’ team.”
The 49-year-old star finished his speech thanking fans in his native South Korea.
He added: “Thank you to everyone who watched in Korea. Thank you.”
The night also saw Hwang Dong Hyuk receive the Outstanding Director Award for a Drama Series.
Earlier this month, the survival drama took home four honors at the Creative Arts Emmys, with Lee Yoo-mi winning Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
