Showmax subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa can now watch BBC World News live until 23 September 2022, including the UK’s Most Reigning British Reigns on Wednesday 19 September at 1pm at Westminster Abbey Live broadcast of the funeral of the long monarch.
The live news channel is available to all subscribers regardless of their plan.
Although Showmax does not normally offer live news channels, the Showmax Pro plan includes live news from Euronews, Africanews and Newzroom Afrika; KTN News, KBC, NTV and K24 in Kenya only; GTV, TV3, Adom TV, UTV and GHOne; and SABC News in South Africa as standard equipment only.
The Pro plan also has other perks such as live streaming of matches including football from major European leagues such as the EPL and La Liga.
From time to time, Showmax offers subscribers, including Big Brother Naija, additional live channels. In 2021, Showmax airs a pop-up tribute channel dedicated to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.
While the video streaming platform might be expensive for some, Showmax has partnered with Safaricom to offer a mobile plan.
The normal plan costs 300 Kenyan shillings and comes with 1 GB of data. Streaming is maximized at SD quality, which is more than enough for watching movies and TV shows.
Those who want access to more services, such as news and game streaming, can pay KES 1300 for a mobile plan. Safaricom then adds 3 GB of data stream for the client. This is a cheaper option than paying KES 2100 for the Showmax Pro for other equipment.
Both plans are limited to one screen.
While I love Showmax, it’s time for the platform to increase the number of screens from 2 to 4 or more, like Netflix’s most expensive plan (KES 1450, although it doesn’t have live channels) and the quality goes from HD to at least 4K.
