United Arab Emirates A report by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Unido) says it ranks first in the Middle East and North Africa for quality infrastructure that supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the country level.
This Emirates The index ranks 11th globally, ahead of Portugal, Singapore, Finland, Denmark and Belgium. UNIDO’s Sustainable Infrastructure Quality Index report tracks measures taken by 137 countries against a list of 36 indicators.
The index is based on five main dimensions: metrology, certification, conformity assessment, policy and standards. It developed indicators for each indicator, then linked them to three of the five pillars of the SDGs: Prosperity, People and Planet.
Omar Al Suwaidi, Deputy Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, said: “The UAE has an advanced framework to support quality infrastructure and has performed well across the five main indicators of the index.”
“UNIDO’s report reflects the UAE’s capabilities and efforts to create a supportive, efficient, innovative and secure legislative environment.”
The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals aim to eradicate poverty, protect the environment and achieve equality, peace and prosperity.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals, including quality education, decent work and economic growth, are part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The UAE’s ranking reflects the government’s efforts and “represents the government’s clear strategy to make the UAE one of the most advanced countries in the world,” said Hanan Ahli, director of the Federal Centre for Competitiveness and Statistics.
The ranking is “a global recognition of the efforts of MoIAT and its strategic partners to achieve sustainable development and enhance the UAE’s position in the global competitiveness report”.
Ms Ahli added that globally, the UAE ranks first out of 152 competition indicators and in the top 10 out of 425 competition indicators.
This is one of 1,502 indicators published by the United Nations and other international organizations and reported by the Federal Center for Competitiveness and Statistics.
Unido Director General Gerd Muller said the index showed the value of quality infrastructure as a driver of sustainable development and the importance of investment.
“The index aims to bridge the information gap by being the first tool to clearly measure how good fit-for-purpose infrastructure meets the Sustainable Development Goals,” Mr Mueller said.
The UAE’s ranking “is a milestone in our efforts to increase global competitiveness. It reflects the country’s advanced and integrated ecosystem of high-quality infrastructure, which contributes to its economic and industrial growth, while emphasising the quality of its frameworks, certifications and standards ”, said Al Hajri, Director General of Dawood Dubai Municipality.
Hilal Al Kaabi, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Compliance Committee, said Abu Dhabi aims to build a knowledge-based economy by building a quality infrastructure system based on international standards.
“The Council supports regulators and government agencies in implementing quality standards and systems to ensure that products, employees and processes comply with relevant standards set by Abu Dhabi to improve the level of safety and quality of products and enhance the competitiveness of these products locally, regionally and globally,” he said.
The number of development indicators where the UAE tops the global rankings rose to 156 from 121 before the Covid-19 pandemic, government data show. At the same time, the number of people in the top five in the UAE rose to 288 from 189 in the same period.
