HBO absurd comedy season 2 ghost Starts Friday. The show is produced and co-starred by signal to noise ratio veteran Fred Armisen, Anna Fabregaand Julius TorresPrimarily Spanish, but quickly found a mainstream audience.
That said, it’s a bit difficult to describe, even for its creator. “I mean, basically [pitch] Kind of like, ‘Four friends make up a team that’s been hired to fool people,'” Armisen told ABC Audio, admitting that wasn’t enough.
“I know, it feels hard to distill,” agreed Cesc Fabrega.
“That’s why the elevator pitch needs an emergency stop and it’s like, ‘Okay, I need a few minutes to describe it,'” she said with a laugh.
The basic premise is a bit like if scooby doo Gangs get rid of their haunts rather than fix them, but the comedy quickly establishes its own crazy world.
“The show just keeps growing and evolving…it’s getting more and more ridiculous because that’s how we all feel together,” Torres explained.
For Armisen, who is partly Peruvian, making the show gave him a unique opportunity to bring a different comedic voice to mainstream American audiences.
“It’s mainly about wanting to see a culture in a part of Latin American culture that we don’t see very often, which is kind of weird…” he explained. “That’s kind of a launch pad. But from there, it becomes… something deeper.”
Cesc Fabrega agreed, adding that she’s glad the show has restarted during Hispanic Heritage Month. “This kind of performance is really interesting … like a different perspective on Latino representation,” she said. “…I think there’s a lot of freedom in showing that way, and yes, there are all sorts of walks of life under the huge umbrella of ‘Latinx’.”
