Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – According to Interpack, the leading packaging trade show, 5% of the world’s packaged goods are consumed in the Middle East, where business is expanding significantly. This expanding demand is expected to grow by 21% to 44 million tonnes by 2026. Market statistics show that the region has developed into an emerging market for the industry, which is further driving them to adopt new packaging and processing technologies and improve current production levels.

Saudi Arabia leads the Middle East in packaged food consumption with a share of less than 30%, followed by Iraq and the United Arab Emirates. According to Interpack, consumption in these regions is expected to increase, with Iraq growing by 28%, Saudi Arabia by 22% and the United Arab Emirates by 19%.

The VDMA Food Processing and Packaging Association reports that imports of food processing and packaging equipment to the Middle East market will grow by more than 8% in 2021. The three main suppliers of this machinery are Italy, Germany and China, with Italian production accounting for nearly 28%, Germany about 20% and China making 12% of the machinery.

Baked goods are known as the largest product category in the industry market, and sales are expected to grow by another 20% between 2021 and 2026, reaching 18 million tons. Followed by dairy products, the second largest product category, sales are expected to grow by 19% in 2026. Also expected to increase sales by 25% in 2026 are rice, pasta and noodle products. Likewise, the confectionery category is expected to grow by 14% to 500,000 tons by 2026.
