China reports first monkeypox case | World News

[ad_1]

Beijing: China has found its first monkeypox infection in a patient quarantined for Covid-19 in the southwestern city of Chongqing, state media reported, but the risk of community transmission is low.

“The patient is an international entrant who discovered monkeypox during Covid-19 quarantine,” a report quoted Chongqing health authorities as saying.

Details such as the patient’s gender and age have not been released, and authorities have only said the person had flown in from overseas.

“The patient is being treated in isolation at a designated hospital and is in stable condition,” the South China Morning Post said, citing a statement from the Chongqing Municipal Health Commission, adding that the patient’s close contacts were being quarantined for TCM observation.

“Experts concluded that the patient had been quarantined when he entered Chongqing and had no record of social activities. … the risk of an epidemic is low,” the statement from the South China Morning Post said.

On July 23, the World Health Organization declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of global concern after cases were detected in non-endemic countries such as Europe and the United States.

Hong Kong, which is governed by Beijing as a special administrative region, reported its first case of monkeypox on September 6 in an international passenger who had flown in from the Philippines, state media China Daily reported.

State media reports that since the disease broke out in other countries, Chinese officials have developed diagnostic and treatment measures as preventive measures, in addition to guidelines to prevent and control the disease.

Chinese experts told state media earlier that it was only a matter of time before monkeypox cases were detected in the mainland, but “…given its limited transmission routes and speed of transmission, the disease is unlikely to lead to a large outbreak”.
