Abu Dhabi’s Warehouse421 announces plans to focus on food security, ecology

Abu Dhabi-based art and design centre Warehouse421 has announced its Fall 2022 programme, “Season of Regrounding”, which includes two major exhibitions and an extensive public programme focusing on creative and public approaches to reconnecting with the environment.

The programme, which runs from September 21 to December 25, will include the second iteration of the exhibition “On Foraging: Food Knowledge and Environmental Imagination in the UAE Landscape”, which debuted at Expo 2020’s United Arab Emirates Pavilion display. Open to the wider public this fall in Warehouse421’s gallery space, showcasing new commissions and research on food safety in the UAE.

Also scheduled for fall 2022 is “Let Me Tell You Something,” the first institutional solo exhibition of Emirati artist Mohamed Khalid. As a result of Warehouse421’s Art Development exhibition programme, the exhibition features seven new commissions created this year.

The exhibition examines the materiality of everyday objects and inspires their metaphorical potential, exploring the connections of the artist’s themes and their fragile connection to humanity.

Showcasing seven new works created this year, including conceptual photography, installations and a series of blueprints and paintings, “Let Me Tell You Something” explores connections by examining systems that combine to form communication, from handwriting to technical algorithms to Pieces of paper, all drawn from episodes of communication missed in real life.

Mohamed Khalid is an alumnus of the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship (SEAF) and Campus Art Dubai 7.0, with previous group exhibitions at Art Dubai, Warehouse421 and Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

The Fall 2022 program includes more than 35 lectures, workshops, symposia, and special events that are serious explorations of creative and public ways of thinking about climate action.

As one of Warehouse421’s broadest and strongest public engagement programs to date, this season highlights alternative ways that exist in our natural ecosystems that challenge anthropomorphic perspectives and bring back insights into conventional sources of wisdom. direct, physical and tangible participation.

Highlights of the program include products that respond to the themes addressed in the Foraging exhibition, such as “How to Sit Under a Tree,” a meditation workshop led by artist Nahla Tabbaa to explore Mina Zayed’s resilient ecosystem; A natural and gourmet version of the Warehouse421 culture bus; and food-related presentations by artists Moza Al Matrooshi and Tabbaa.

Other exciting and noteworthy activities include trips to farms across Abu Dhabi; photo opportunities at eco-sites such as Jubail Mangrove Park and Wasbar Fossil Dunes; father and daughter visits to Mina Zayed’s food market; and a A collaborative sustainability workshop that invites participants to create a site-specific large-scale installation made from beach-collected waste.

The season will also include ‘Playing with Nature’, an outdoor market bringing together local artists, artisans, educators and creatives to showcase a range of sustainably made products. The market will run for two days and include activities and workshops that children and families can enjoy, as well as live music.

This season was developed by Warehouse421 with participation from partner organizations such as Services for Educational Development, Research and Inclusion Awareness (SEDRA); Bombay Institute for Critical Analysis and Research (BICAR), The Institute of Emerging Art, 100/100: Hundred Best Arabic Posters, Gulf Photo Plus et al.
