French President Emmanuel Macron’s choice of footwear during a trip to London ahead of the Queen’s funeral has sparked a flood of comments and disinformation online.
On Sunday, the 44-year-old leader was pictured walking with his wife Brigitte in front of Westminster Hall, where the late British monarch lay before his funeral on Monday.
Instead of wearing his usual suit and formal black leather shoes, Macron was pictured looking unusually casual, wearing a pair of sunglasses and – to the shock of some observers – navy blue sneakers.
Fueled by critical online comments, French talk show radio channel RMC hosted a debate on Monday on whether it was “appalling” for the president to see streetwear on such occasions, with host Estelle Denis insisting there was “respect for dress code” specification”.
Le Figaro called them “discord trainers”.
Other outlets have sought to correct a growing claim on social media, instigated by far-right politicians and critics of the president, that Macron wore sneakers at the Queen’s funeral on Monday.
“No, Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron are not wearing sneakers to pay tribute to the Queen,” said an article on the national channel TF1.
When the French leader and his wife paid their respects in front of the coffin on Sunday, both changed into more formal attire, with Macron wearing a black suit and black tie.
The couple wore similar formal attire for their state funeral at Westminster Abbey, where they arrived by bus with other leaders.
However, the photos do draw attention to Macron’s expensive taste – a potential liability for a man derided by critics as a “president of the rich” who was pictured in Use a jet ski while on vacation.
The sneakers in question, made by French luxury fashion brand JM Weston, cost 570 euros ($570) a pair, Le Figaro reported.
