S Jaishankar meets UAE foreign minister to review bilateral ties ahead of UN General Assembly

Jaishankar discussed with the UAE minister and appreciated his insights into the global situation. After the meeting, he also tweeted to applaud each other, thinking that the meeting was a success.

He has also held a series of bilateral talks with counterparts in the Balkans, Europe and the Caribbean, the Middle East and Asia. During the trilateral ministerial meeting with the UAE and France, India also ensured a fruitful exchange of ideas to strengthen mutual cooperation between the two countries.

Diplomatic week busy for Foreign Minister S Jaishankar

Notably, S Jaishankar will be attending the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next week. During his visit, he is likely to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and several heads of state.

This week, Jashankar will hold around 50 official events, including bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral meetings. India’s foreign minister will address the UN General Assembly on Saturday. The theme of the UNGA team is “Watershed Moments: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges”.

Security Council reform will be at the top of Jaishankar’s agenda as he meets dozens of world leaders during a week packed with General Assembly sessions and a number of side events.

One of the key highlights of the visit will be the ‘India@75: Showcasing India’s Partnership in UN Action’ event on Saturday. The event will mark India’s 75th anniversary of its independence. It will show how India can work with the United Nations to achieve sustainable development and international peace goals.

S Jaishankar will be in New York from September 18th to 24th. After that, he will travel to Washington, D.C., where he will stay until September 28. During his visit to Washington, the foreign minister will review several issues to further strengthen the India-US strategic partnership. He is expected to meet with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and other senior officials in the Biden administration.

Reform of the UN Security Council

At an upcoming United Nations meeting, U.S. President Joe Biden will present ideas for Security Council reform and consult with other leaders, according to U.S. Permanent Representative Linda Thomas-Greenberg.

S Jaishankar will also chair a meeting of G4 countries comprising India, Brazil, Germany and Japan. The G4 countries advocate the expansion of the UN Security Council and support each other’s claims.

S Jaishankar will also participate in meetings of the QUAD Group, which includes India, Australia, Japan and the United States. Along with QUAD, all BRICS member countries will also come together to discuss their prospects.

Some 153 heads of state or government, three deputy prime ministers and 34 foreign ministers are expected to attend the UN General Assembly as things return to normal in the post-coronavirus pandemic.
