Dubai’s own rainforest, Green Planet, is now the new home of flying foxes – one of the world’s largest “giant bat” species capable of sustained flight. From September 16, 2022, guests will witness the Middle East’s first population of flying foxes at the Bio Pavilion, which features more than 3,000 plants and animals on four levels of indoor rainforest.

With their tawny fur that gleams in the sun, flying foxes are highly social and will live alongside lemurs, sloths and parrots, and guests can watch them fly freely in the enclosed bio pavilion. Visitors will be able to interact with and take pictures with the animals, and learn more about these super-social individuals commonly known as the Malaysian flying fox.

Giant bats use their keen sense of smell to find food and use their excellent eyesight to navigate, and play an important role in keeping native forests healthy by spreading seeds and pollinating flowering plants. The wingspan of animals can reach more than 1.8m; the wingspan of flying foxes that reach the green planet can reach 1m and the weight can reach 1kg.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recently assessed their species as almost threatened. The body length is 27-38cm, and the average lifespan in the wild is 15 years. However, under human care, they can live up to 30 years; Green Planet’s conservation efforts will be part of an important global effort to protect this species.

In addition to six areas of the rainforest featuring sloths, piranhas, tropical birds and reptiles, these aerial wonders will now be part of a one-day experience at Green Planet Dubai.
