TSR Tech: Apple just released a plan to scan the US #iPhone for images of child sexual abuse. Associated Press News Report.
This move was praised by child protection organizations, but it caused some security researchers to worry that the system might be abused by government agencies.
The tool is designed to detect known pornographic images of children, called “NeuralHash”, which will be scanned before uploading to iCloud. If NeuraHash finds a match, the image will be manually reviewed. If child pornography is confirmed, the user account will be disabled and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children will be notified.
In addition, as a child safety measure, Apple will scan users’ encrypted information for pornographic content. The detection system will only mark images that are already in the center’s known child pornography database, so it can ensure that parents take innocent photos of their children while taking a bath, and their images will not be marked.
But of course, some people have concerns. Matthew Green, a top cryptography researcher at Johns Hopkins University, worries that the system may be used to frame innocent people by sending them seemingly harmless images designed to trigger matching of child pornography.
This may deceive Apple’s algorithm and falsely alert law enforcement agencies. “Researchers have been able to do this very easily,” Green said of the ability to deceive such systems.
Opponents of the technology say that other abuses may include government surveillance of dissidents or protesters.
“What happens when the Chinese government says,’This is the list of documents we want you to scan’,” Green asked. “Does Apple say no? I hope they say no, but their technology will not say no.”
Other technology companies, including Microsoft, Google, and Facebook, have been sharing digital fingerprints of known child sexual abuse images for years.
Apple It has been under pressure from the government for a long time, demanding increased surveillance of encrypted data.
