The Deputy Minister of Culture and Youth said henna was “an embodiment of celebration, a vehicle for expressing joy and special moments”
As henna will be nominated for UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list next year, Abu Dhabi’s cultural and tourism authorities have called in Arab countries to help prepare the submission.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) — in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth and the Arab Education, Culture and Science Organization (ALECSO) — recently hosted representatives from 16 Arab countries to discuss an inclusive UNESCO list henna in .
The meeting, held in Abu Dhabi from September 5 to 8, is the latest of several meetings to be held in preparation for the submission of henna nomination documents on March 31, 2023. It showcases the UAE’s leadership in promoting nomination documents for many intangible cultural heritage.
“The UAE attaches great importance to the practices that highlight our Emirati identity and present them to the world,” said Mubarak Al Nahi, Deputy Minister of Culture and Youth.
“It is our responsibility to protect and perpetuate our cultural authenticity. The inclusion of this element of our heritage on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage is an important step in highlighting the role of henna in Arab and Gulf cultures and identities , which is shared by many other cultures around the world.”
The UAE’s efforts began with the success of the International Falcon Archive in 2010, and other projects subsequently included in the UNESCO list include Al-Taghrooda, Al-Ayyala, Al-Razfa, Majlis, Gahwa, Palm Trees, Camel Racing and Arabian language calligraphy.
“In our society, henna has various uses in medicine and decoration,” said Al Nakhi, “It is a special symbol of social occasions, the embodiment of celebrations, and a special tool to express joy and special moments. “

We value our close cooperation with the UAE Ministry of Culture and Youth, leading the League of Arab States in advocating the use of henna, our common African Precious elements of tangible heritage – inscribed on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
This is part of DCT Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to preserve our cultural heritage and ensure that the legacy of our ancestors is passed on to future generations. The cultural and historical ties between Arab nations are deep, and it is through cooperation with our neighbors that our efforts to preserve and document our customs and traditions are strengthened and expanded. “
The UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage is a key element of DCT Abu Dhabi’s efforts to ensure the protection and promotion of intangible cultural heritage. The Sector continuously strives to facilitate this by strengthening its collaboration with UNESCO, ALECSO and other authorities and partners concerned with local, regional and world heritage sites.
