Circular economy shift drives digital transformation of packaging

Packaging suppliers are under intense pressure to drive the transition to a circular economy by asking manufacturers, retailers and consumers to provide alternative and eco-friendly packaging solutions themselves.

LivingPackets creates sustainable packaging solutions: LivingPackets, which provides eco-friendly packaging solutions for e-commerce deliveries, has partnered with NXP Semiconductors to develop and launch IoT-based sustainable ‘THE BOX’ to enable zero-waste package shipments and provide end-to-end visibility of package paths across the supply chain .

Dell develops solution to track and trace recycled plastic: Dell intends to create a circular economy that prevents plastic from entering the ocean by recycling and reusing it in its supply chain. As such, it partnered with virtualization software provider VMware and deployed blockchain technology to help product end users view the history of recycled materials and ensure the long-term sustainability of their supply chains.

Harpak-ULMA Introduces Smart Packaging Solutions: Packaging equipment maker Harpak-ULMA joins digital transformation and industrial automation supplier Rockwell Automation to develop smart packaging solutions using IoT and augmented reality. These digital solutions are combined with real-time analytics to improve operational efficiency and increase employee productivity.

Paruchuri concluded: “As investors tighten policies on non-sustainable packaging, sustainability has become so important that plastic packaging companies struggle to secure funding. Packaging companies’ adoption of end-to-end technology in their supply chains is improving Operations, supplier reliability and customer engagement.
