UAE teen Vaishnave Mahesh shines in T20 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe

[ad_1]

Vaishnave Mahesh produced one of the greatest moments in UAE cricket history when the national team beat Zimbabwe in the Women’s T20 World Cup qualifier in Abu Dhabi.

Schoolgirl spin bowler moved to tears after last loss in match to Papua New Guineahas ended the UAE’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

The way she bounced back to a remarkable four-door victory over Zimbabwe showed a strength of character that belied her early years.

First, Vaishnave, one of three 15-year-olds in the UAE, had an excellent leg spin.

Two rounds later, she had two wickets, including the scalp of Kelis Ndlovu, who is arguably the tournament leader so far.

She ended her 4 quota with 3 out of 15. Even that didn’t flatter her because her last 3 deliveries were 7.

The fact that Zimbabwe finished with a scoreline of 120 after 20 over seven means the home side still have quite a task ahead.

However, given how good they are in possession, they leave the pitch with enthusiasm.

Despite Theertha Satish losing the second ball in their reply, the UAE started a running chase.

Esha Oza is back in amazing fashion. The opener bears her name in T20 international cricket for two centuries, but has been underwhelming in the competition recently.

Oza hit two sixes on the way from 26 deliveries to 36. When she left, however, it felt like the UAE’s chances were gone too.

Kavisha Kumari organized the rest of the chase and ended with 41 not out.

The hero, though, was her partner at the other end of the final, where the UAE started needing 14 to win.

It was cut to the last and Vaishnave found the border rope to complete the victory.

However, Zimbabwe will still enter the next phase. Ireland stand between them and a place in the World Cup after they beat Scotland to reach the semi-finals.

Opener Gaby Lewis, 21, hit 66 from 37 balls to help Ireland beat neighbouring Scotland in the round of 19 in their first game of the day.

Bangladesh beat the United States by 55 points at the Zayed Cricket Ground for their third consecutive victory, thanks in large part to Murshida Khatun’s 77-match unbeaten run.

That means the defending Asian Cup champions are at the top of their group. They will face Thailand in the other semi-final on Friday.
