Looking for a high-quality TV show but can’t get it on your TV? You can find Emmy-nominated and Emmy-winning TV shows on DVDs in the library, and new shows are being added all the time.
ABC’s first season “Abbott Elementary School” It’s been a hit on Internet TV for the past year. Nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, this workplace sim features a group of teachers at an underfunded public school in Philadelphia. Critics say it’s hilarious, empathetic to teachers and a wise critique of the education system. The show won Outstanding Writing and Shirley Lee Ralph won the Supporting Actress award. The series also received nominations for a leading actress (Quanta Brunson) and a supporting actor (Taylor James Williams), as well as a second supporting actress nomination (Janelle James). A copy of the Lichfield Library will arrive when the season releases on DVD in mid-October, but you can get on the reserved list now.
Best Series Nomination, Season 1 “Yellow Jacket” It’s a horror suspense drama on Showtime. A talented high school girls soccer team survives a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness, leading to a situation similar to the classic novel Lord of the Flies or the TV series Lost. These characters will also appear as adults 25 years later. The show also received nominations for Outstanding Director, Screenplay, Actress (Melanie Lynskey) and Supporting Actress (Christina Ricci). The Litchfield Library now has this set of DVDs available for viewing.
HBO satire “White Lotus” Won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series. Critics described it as an uncomfortable but effective comedy drama that strung together wealth and power in a unique tropical resort setting. The show also won awards for Outstanding Directing, Writing, Supporting Actress (Jennifer Coolidge) and Supporting Actor (Murray Bartlett). Jake Lacy and Steve Zahn were also nominated for supporting roles. This DVD set is now available from the Litchfield Library.
Also nominated for Outstanding Limited Series, “Pam and Tommy” is a Hulu drama based on the true story of actress Pamela Anderson and musician Tommy Lee’s marriage and their infamous family movie being stolen and sold. The show is also up for three acting awards: Sebastian Stan for Best Actor, Lily James for Actress and Seth Rogan for Supporting Actor . The miniseries is currently available in the library.
In the age of streaming, making the Emmy category for TV movies is a strange holdover from the past. Many major movies now go straight to streaming services without showing in theaters. Regardless of how films were selected for this category, you can find two of them at the Lichfield Library. “Ray Donovan: The Movie” It is the follow-up to the seven-season crime drama of the same name. “Renault 911!: Finding QAnon” It’s a complement to the eight seasons of Renault 911! Parody series.
The Lichfield Library has a winning series in the Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series category. “The Beatles: The Return” is a documentary about the band’s recordings, including the Beatles’ last live performance, a rooftop concert in London. Peter Jackson also won an Emmy for directing the 3-episode Disney+ series. DVD sets are now available in the library.
Also nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series on Showtime “We need to talk about Cosby” Explore Bill Cosby’s complex life and career. Writer-director W. Kamau Bell speaks with comedians, journalists, victims of Cosby and others to examine the legacy of comics and the industry that contributed to his crime. This DVD set is available for loan from the library.
