Explanation: What is Moonlight? Why are IT companies against it?

[ad_1]

Wipro has laid off 300 employees as part of a tough stance on part-time workers. According to Wipro chairman Rishad Premji, the company recently found 300 employees working part-time and for competitors, adding that these people have no place in the organization.

What is “Moonlight”?

The term “part-time” refers to doing many jobs in addition to one’s regular job. Part-time work is used to describe the practice of working for another organization while dedicating to one’s primary workplace, often without the employer’s knowledge.

Why doesn’t the company allow it?

Businesses disagree with this approach, claiming that having employees perform a large number of tasks reduces productivity. Part-time jobs have been discussed in the IT industry as working from home has become the norm during the Covid-19 pandemic, which is believed to have led to an increase in dual employment.

Moral issue

According to comments from Wipro’s CEO, there is some discord within the Indian IT company over part-time jobs. NG Subramaniam, chief operating officer (CFO) of Tata Consultancy Services, described it as an ethical dilemma, but CP Gurnani, chief executive of Tech Mahindra, said he would accept the practice if it allowed employees to earn extra income. He also forewarned employees about fraud and wanted them to be honest.

Terminate warning

Another major IT company, Infosys, has warned its employees not to accept a second job without first notifying their employer. Infosys recently reminded all of its employees to research their employment contracts before accepting other jobs in a letter sent to employees by the human resources department. In fact, employers have also warned that employees risk being fired if they accept a second job during or after hours.

Cheating

Most IT companies have stepped up their opposition to part-time jobs and threatened to fire employees found to be working two jobs at the same time. Part-time jobs may be considered unfair competition if the employee’s contract provides for non-compete restrictions and exclusive employment.

breach of good faith

As quoted by Moneycontrol, Premji said: “If you really look at the definition of a part-time job, it’s a second job in secret, I’m all about transparency. As part of transparency, individuals in an organization can have a very candid Dialogue.” Premji speaking at the All India Management Association event.

He went on to say that businesses and individuals can unanimously choose to pursue a second career. He reiterated that existing employees working for rival companies had “completely violated integrity at the deepest level,” alluding to the Wipro incident.
