BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly on speculative move to Dubai: ‘ICC chairmanship is not in my hands’

[ad_1]

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said on Thursday that the ICC chairman was “not in my hands”, downplaying strong speculation that the former India captain could travel to Dubai. In July, the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved the process of electing its next president in November. (more cricket news)

It was decided after the Birmingham meeting that Greg Barclay’s term ends this year, elections will be decided by a simple majority, and the chairman term will run for two years between December 1, 2022 and November 30, 2024.

Ganguly’s name has been around since then. But when asked about it, the erstwhile graceful batsman simply said: “The chairman of the ICC is not in my hands.” The ICC Board has decided that a two-thirds majority is no longer required to be elected as the chairman.

According to the latest proposal, the contestant of the ballot paper will be selected as the winner. In a 16-member board, the candidate needs just nine votes from the directors to get elected.

The Indian men’s team has been in poor form recently, with Ganguly admitting that poor performance at major tournaments is a concern. “Rohit Sharma’s winning percentage is close to 80. India has lost the last three or four matches, but before that…he was ahead in 35-40 matches and only lost five or six.

“I’m sure Rohit and Rahul Dravid will care about the team and everything and they will improve. I’m not worried about a loss or two, but yeah, we didn’t do well in the big tournaments. We will talk about that..

“The team will be away (for the T20 World Cup in Australia) for two to three weeks and will have time to adapt and participate in practice matches.” Talking about Kohli’s recent century, he said: “Virat is in the Asian Cup. Great performance, that’s very good news and hopefully he can continue to do that.”

Veteran Jhulan Goswami has retired from international cricket after his third and final ODI against England, with Ganguly calling the striker an “absolute legend”. “Jhulan is an absolute legend…for the last three terms as BCCI president we have had a very good relationship…she has had a fantastic career. She is almost 40 years old.

“Jhulan will make her mark in women’s cricket, she is a role model and she deserves top honours after finishing Lord’s. She is an absolute champion.” It’s been a while now, but Ganguly still can’t believe India is in the game Australia lost the Commonwealth Games final.

“Still wondering how we lost the CWG final, we’ve been cruising, we’re winning… BCCI is putting a lot of effort into women’s cricket. We’ve won two games in England. I feel good about progress Happy.”
