Rihanna will be the star of the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show.
The 34-year-old confirmed the news on Sunday (09/25/22) by sharing a photo on her Instagram of her tattooed arm clutching a soccer ball, hours after rumours started circulating Do a show.
Apple Music also tweeted: “It’s on. @rihanna will be on stage for Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show on 2.12.23. #SBLVII @NFL @NFLonFox @RocNation,”
The NFL tweeted the same image as Rihanna with the message: “Let’s start #SBLVII.”
Jay-Z’s entertainment agency, Roc Nation, has helped produce the halftime show over the past few years, and the NFL tweeted the same image — saying, “Let’s start #SBLVII.”
The untitled image of Rihanna was released hours after TMZ reported she was in talks for next year’s national championship game.
In the first 20 minutes of her Instagram being confirmed, it received nearly 700,000 likes, including one from musician Lizzo, who said online: “Scream.”
Super Bowl LVII will be played at State Farm Stadium on February 12, 2023.
Jay-Z, 52, later said of the news: “Rihanna was a generational genius, a woman of humble origins who exceeded expectations every time.
“A man born on the small island of Barbados who became one of the greatest artists of all time. Self-made in business and entertainment.”
Rihanna turned down a chance to perform at the 2019 Super Bowl, citing her rejection because Colin Kaepernick, 34, was allegedly treated by the NFL.
The former San Francisco 49ers refused to stand for the U.S. national anthem at the start of games in protest of police brutality and racial injustice, and was signed with no team after he became a free agent — leading to his November 2017 lawsuit NFL, says team owners colluded not to hire him.
The lawsuit was withdrawn in 2019, and Colin and the NFL reached a nondisclosure agreement, which he still hasn’t signed.
Rihanna told Vogue of her decision: “I dare not do it. For what? Who benefits from it? Not me.
“I just can’t sell out. I can’t be a facilitator. There are things within that organization that I totally disagree with, and I’m not going to serve them in any way.”
The 2019 show features Adam Levine’s Maroon 5 with special guests Big Boi and Travis Scott.
According to TMZ, Rihanna’s announcement follows reports that Taylor Swift, 32, was invited to the halftime show but “rejected” because she wanted to finish re-recordings of her first six albums first.
The singer gave birth to her first child in May with boyfriend A$AP Rocky, 32, and fans await the release of her ninth studio album.
