Get your UAE falconry license online now ‘instantly’

Abu Dhabi: Aspiring Emirati falconers can now apply online immediately for a falconry permit, which allows adult Emirati citizens to engage in Exhibition of traditional hunting activities (Adihex).

The licensing service is available through the Abu Dhabi Government’s TAMM digital platform and allows falconers to easily obtain licenses, EAD said.

The announcement coincides with an event aimed at promoting traditional Emirati cultural events, with a focus on falconry and equestrianism. The seven-day event is spread across multiple halls at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and is expected to welcome more than 100,000 visitors.

Falconry Regulations

According to Law No. 22 of 2005, the UAE allows adult Emiratis to engage in falconry. Ahmed Al Hashemi, Executive Director of Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity at EAD, shed light on the various elements that govern Emirati cultural events in Abu Dhabi.

• Applicants for a falcon license must be Emiratis and at least 18 years of age.

• Falcons should be registered in the Department of Climate Change and Environment’s Falcon Registration System. Proof of registration must be submitted if required by the authorities.

• Falconers can only hunt bustards.

• Falconry can only be done in open areas, at least 2 km from major and minor roads, prohibited areas such as nature reserves, forests, residential areas, military installations and oil production areas.

• Falcon licenses last only one season and must be renewed once they expire.

• Do not hunt any wild animals or disturb them in any way.

• Falconers are prohibited from driving vehicles over vegetation or damaging vegetation in any way.

• Falcon hunting licenses cannot be transferred to others.

“Law No. 22 of 2005 Governing Wild Hunting in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi establishes the legal framework for wild hunting activities. The law sets out environmental controls and standards…to protect wildlife species in a way that does not destroy wildlife [threaten their] Sustainability…in their natural habitat. The law helps preserve the heritage of falconry and wildlife, and protect hunting areas while developing wildlife resources,” Al Hashemi said.

Subsequently, Abu Dhabi issued Executive Committee Decision No. 5 of 2021 on amending the implementing regulations of the Abu Dhabi Hunting Law, designating EAD as the issuing authority for falconry licenses.

“The resolution stipulates that the licence shall include the terms and conditions of the hunting licence, including the permitted hunters, the season and area of ​​the hunt, the permitted species to be hunted by traditional methods and other necessary conditions. These clauses are intended to enforce the provisions of the law. [for species preservation]and to establish and promote sustainable hunting through traditional methods,” added Al Hashemi.

About Adihex

The 19th Adihex is organised by the Emirates Falconers Club. This year’s edition includes 900 companies and organizations from 58 countries. It will include 100 live events, including sports competitions, painting workshops, and even poetry nights. Falcons, camels and horses will be auctioned on site, and competitions will be held to select the best photos, the most beautiful captive falcons and the best equipped hunting vehicles.

The Emirates Falcon Club will also host workshops focusing on falcon care and falconry principles. Visitors can also pet the Saluki, or learn about traditional crafts including pottery, carving, pottery and palm leaf weaving.
