The fourth annual Shipyard Music Festival shows from the performers, volunteers, food vendors and people helping behind the scenes how it takes an entire community to create a festival. The festival kicks off September 23-24 at Century Casino and brings 17 eclectic bands and a variety of food and fun to the entire community.
Hosted by rustmedia, the event includes two performance stages: the Main Stage sponsored by Century Casino and the Scout Session Stage sponsored by SEMO. The bands alternate on Fridays from 6-10pm and Saturdays from 1:30-10pm. Samantha Fish and the Yonder Mountain String band are the protagonists of the festival.
The bands are a mix of genres, says Jasmine Jones, a Rustmedia employee who helps organize and promote Shipyard.
“Samantha Fish is originally from Kansas City, but she’s playing nationally, and she’s actually playing in Europe after Cape Girardeau, so it’s kind of interesting to see Cape Girardeau in her lineup ,” Jones said.
In addition to big names, local bands also like Logan Chapman and Mike Renick Perform on the Boy Scout Stage.
Jones said the shipyard not only brings the community together but also attracts tourists from all over the country. She talked to someone who drove seven hours just to see Mike Mains and Branches performing on the main stage on Saturday.
“There’s a lot of planning every year. It’s a lot of coordination – there’s a lot going on behind the scenes and people can’t see what you have to do to make a festival happen, so I think it’s really cool to have something like this in Cape Town ,” Jones said.
Shipyard volunteer Ken Murphy said he was excited to help with the rustmedia campaign as they helped create Cape Comic Con. He and his family have been volunteering at Shipyard since four years ago.
Murphy said the shipyard was the brainchild of Jeff Rawson, who worked with rustmedia, and the festival has undergone some significant changes since it was originally conceived.
“He’s really been through a lot of things — we have, the pandemic. He has to keep creating and be creative, so after the pandemic, he brought the event to the casino parking lot. So now we have the casino as a sponsor, That’s one way they help support the event. Another big difference is that there are now two stages instead of one, so bands can now alternate without downtime,” Murphy said.
In addition to entertainment, there are four different food vendors to keep festival-goers full and happy.
Mary Jane bourbon + Smokehouse Erica Kemp’s Front Office Manager, Social Media and Marketing Manager said they love the environment and serve the food the community loves.
Another big part of running a festival is the hours of technical planning that goes on behind the scenes.
Cleo Watkins, a graduate of SEMO Theater Technology and Design, works for High Profile, the local pharmacy that sponsors the festival, and likes seeing the festival from a design perspective.
“As a theatre technology and design student, I’ve been behind the scenes and that’s what I love the most. Knowing that it takes a full production team, it takes one person to get all the bands, it takes a full economics team It takes an unbelievable, unbelievable effort to put together a big community event like this,” Watkins said.
