The Abu Dhabi Environment Agency (EAD) has announced the immediate issuance of traditional hunting licences (falcons) through the “TAMM” platform. The move is part of the government’s trend framework to strengthen the emirate’s digital transformation process.

TAMM is the Abu Dhabi government portal and one-stop digital platform that allows falconers to obtain licenses instantly and easily without having to go to a service center.

The announcement coincides with EAD’s participation in the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (Adihex), which opened at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre on Monday and will run until October 2.

Ahmed Al Hashemi, Executive Director, Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Department, EAD, said: “Law No. 22 of 2005 governing wild hunting in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi established the legal framework for wild hunting activities. High-targeted environmental controls and standards in a manner that does not conflict with the sustainability of wildlife populations in natural habitats.

He added: “Executive Council Decision (5) of 2021 on amending the implementing regulations of the Hunting Law was issued last year to support the hunting sector’s efforts to preserve Abu Dhabi’s traditional hunting heritage. It stipulates that the EAD shall Hunting permits are issued using traditional methods outside of designated hunting areas. Hunting is prohibited in certain areas, including within or near the boundaries of pastoral and nature reserves.”

The official noted that the resolution stipulates that licenses should include the terms and conditions of hunting licenses, including the season and area of hunting, species hunted by traditional methods, and other necessary conditions.

These clauses aim to enforce legal provisions on protecting species and establish and promote sustainable hunting through traditional methods. “

Al Hashemi said the EAD had identified species that were allowed to be hunted by licensed falconers, which included only Houbara birds. Hunting is permitted with licensed falcons registered with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and if required, proof of their registration should be submitted to ensure that the hunting activity complies with specific laws and environmental controls.

Traditional hunting is limited to open areas, away from major and minor roads, and avoiding restricted areas such as nature reserves, forests, residential, military and oil-producing areas. The agency stressed that licensees must adhere to set hunting deadlines and issue licenses for only one season. UNEP-Abu Dhabi will also begin issuing permits for wild hunting for the 2022-2023 season between 20 October and 20 January 2023.

Terms and Conditions set by EAD:

>> It is forbidden to hunt and disturb any kind of wild animals. Vehicles are not allowed to drive past and destroy vegetation.

>> Transfer of hunting licenses to others is also prohibited. A permit must be carried when hunting and presented upon request.

>> In order to obtain a falcon license, the applicant must be a UAE citizen and be at least 18 years old.

>> Falcons should be registered in the Department of Climate Change and Environment’s Falcon Registration System.

>> Upon activation of the instant service, falconers will be able to apply for a wild hunting license through the ‘TAMM’ smart app or through the ‘TAMM’ website, which can be accessed using the Emirates Pass via the Emirates Digital ID.

>> After the terms and conditions are approved, applicants for falconry will obtain a wild hunting license electronically through the ecosystem “TAMM”.
