Scarlett Johansson says she named her son Cosmo after putting “a bunch of letters together”.
The 37-year-old actress and her husband Colin Jost, 40, told Entertainment Tonight on Monday (09/26/22) that they believe the naming technique has led to a “glamorous” moniker, getting The approval of all their friends – but not her mother – in-laws.
She said: “We just threw a bunch of letters together. I really found it fascinating and our friends loved it.”
Admitting her mother-in-law didn’t like the name very much, she said: “Colin’s mum had a bit of a hard time accepting the name.
“She’s been suggesting other versions for a while. I was like, ‘He’s already here. He’s out. Like, it’s over’.
Scarlett and Colin were married in 2020 and announced the arrival of their son in April 2021.
Colin also told his mum that they “didn’t quite understand” their choice of their son’s name.
He said: “After three or four days, she’ll say, ‘Cosmo? Is it final? Did you submit a birth certificate?
“We were like, ‘Oh yeah, we’re doing it in the hospital’. She was like, ‘Okay. Interesting. Because I read there was another name, Cosimo, with ‘me’. So That could also be an option. Maybe you call him Cosimo, that’s his real name, and then you can call him or Cosmo?
The comic adds that his mom only approved the name after consulting others.
He added: “She lived in Staten Island. Eventually, she started meeting various members of the Italian community who had a lot of Cosmo relatives.
“Then she would call and say, ‘I met someone. They said their uncle’s name was Cosmo, so that’s okay’.
“Then she said, ‘There’s also a Patronus named Cosmos, so that’s another option’.”
But he added that he told her “we don’t need more options (or) worse variants on Cosmo! Thanks, Mom”.
