Emirates News Agency – Abu Dhabi to host World Wholesale Markets Alliance Conference 2022

ABU DHABI, 27th September, 2022 (WAM) — The world produces more food than it consumes each year, yet up to a third of all fresh food produced is reaching our tables, according to a recent study It has been lost or wasted before. United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Experts are calling for better, smarter food supplies and an industry-wide initiative to eliminate current leaks in the system. They suggest that players in the industry need to take a multi-stakeholder approach to supply chains, viewing the supply chain more as an ecosystem, with each player optimizing their role and deploying the necessary technologies, processes and methodologies , to achieve zero waste through a circular economy strategy.

The 2022 World Wholesale Markets Union (WUWM) conference, to be held for the first time in the Middle East in October, will bring together key stakeholders shaping food systems, from government agencies to food producers, wholesale market authorities, food banks, logistics staff and university experts Discuss these key issues.

Confirmed speakers will include Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment; Saeed Al Bahri Salem Al Ameri, Director General, Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Authority (ADAFSA); Graham Sanders, Abu Dhabi Food Centre – Chief Executive Officer, KEZAD Mr. Stephane Layani, Chairman of the World Wholesale Markets Alliance; Mr. Pierre Levy, CEO and Co-founder of Califrais, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Longee International.

“More complex global food supply chains require more infrastructure and training, but we must start building them now,” said research scientist, MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics, director and founder of MIT’s Division of Food and Retail Dr. Chris Mejía says Operations Lab, who will be speaking at the WUWM event.

The session will review some of the best practices that have been successful in drastically reducing food waste in the global marketplace. It will also present some of the key projects underway in the region to support an enhanced food chain. The 2022 WUWM Abu Dhabi conference in Abu Dhabi, themed “Global Food Security in the Twenty-First Century: Risks, Challenges and Solutions for Ensuring Resilient and Sustainable Fresh Food Supply Chains”, will be the most important for the global food industry this year. One of the conferences is working on their 2021 conference, which examines food supply challenges in a post-COVID-19 world.
