The national rail operators of Oman and the United Arab Emirates have signed a $3 billion contract to build a 300-kilometer rail line between the two countries.
Oman Rail and Etihad Rail will form the equally owned Oman-Etihad Rail Company, which will design, develop and operate a railway linking the port of Sohar in Oman to the UAE national rail network, via Abu Dhabi.
The company will also lay the groundwork and plans for the financing and scheduling of the project.
Passenger trains have a top speed of 200 km/h, which equates to a travel time of 100 minutes from Sohar to Abu Dhabi. The freight train will run at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour.
Abdulrahman Salim Al Hatmi, CEO of Asyad Group, the parent company of Oman Railways, Say“Adding new rail capacity to our logistics sector will provide excellent investment opportunities for trading and logistics companies and enable manufacturing and industrial activity to rapidly transcend national borders.
“The railway is also expected to deliver significant strategic economic and social benefits, as it promotes a more diverse and robust national economy, upgrades infrastructure and logistics services, boosts travel and tourism, and ultimately increases quality of life in communities on both sides of the border.”
