The 2023 Met Gala will feature Karl Lagerfeld.
The annual exhibition in New York City is titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” and organizers have confirmed that the event will feature 150 pieces by the legendary fashion designer.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, which hosted the star-studded evening, tweeted: “Coming May 2023 – Explore Karl Lagerfeld’s artistic approach to design in “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” at the Met #CostumeInstitute and style vocabulary. (sic)”
The upcoming exhibition will explore “Lagerfeld’s boundless imagination and passion for innovation,” explained Metropolitan Museum director Max Hollein.
Max said: “Karl Lagerfeld is one of the most fascinating, prolific and recognizable forces in fashion and culture, known for his extraordinary designs and relentless creative output, as well as for his legendary image.
“This immersive exhibition will unfold his unique artistic practice, inviting the public to experience a vital part of Lagerfeld’s boundless imagination and passion for innovation.”
Lagerfeld, who died in February 2019 at the age of 85, worked for companies such as Balmain, Patou, Chloe, Fendi and Chanel during his storied career.
The designer is also admired by some of the world’s biggest stars, including Madonna and Gisele Bundchen, and the exhibition will showcase his “prolific work”.
Museum director Andrew Bolton said in a statement: “The exhibition will explore Lagerfeld’s intricate working methods, tracing the evolution of his fashion from two-dimensional to three-dimensional.
“The fluid lines of his sketches are expressed in the recurring aesthetic themes of his fashions, combining his designs for Balmain, Patou, Chloe, Fendi, Chanel and his namesake label Karl Lagerfeld to create a Diverse and prolific work in fashion history.”
