Slipknot didn’t want their music to be “too easy to digest.”
Guitarist Mick Thomson hated people experimenting with pigeon music, and never wanted “Duality” rockers—who continued to push boundaries with eclectic sounds—in a box.
He told Total Guitar: “It shouldn’t be too easy to digest or even sort.
“When we were doing ‘Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses,’ I was listening to the rough mix in my car in Des Moines. The guys from the Cephalic Carnage were playing in Des Moines that night, so I was in the band for the A guy plays a song and he says, ‘This is so different. What is it? It’s metal, but it’s not metal. How do you define it?
“I said, ‘Stop nailing it to the wall as something and enjoy it as music!’
“You don’t have to put yourself in a cramped pigeonhole, and that’s what I love about metal more than a lot of other music.
“You can draw from more places.
“Punk always sounds like punk, but metal can go in a million different directions.”
Meanwhile, guitarists Jim Root and Mick have recently insisted that Slipknot continues to make some of the best music of their careers, as they dropped “Ego” and “Bull****” early on.
The metal legends released their seventh studio album, “The End, So Far,” on September 30, and the “All Out Life” rocker insists they’ve been together for over two decades and have always been together The reason for being at the top of the last album is that they are all equal and still “love” what they do.
Guitarist Jim told Australian Guitar Magazine: “We’re coming together in our careers.
“We all want to do our best for our roles in this band, and when that becomes a priority, that’s when you put your ego aside and put all the bullshit aside and work together to create Great stuff.”
Meek added: “If we don’t like it, we’ll be foolish enough to keep doing it.
“There are too many cows.
“I think the biggest problem with breaking up the band is when everyone comes in with a f****** ego.
“When the egos and the bulls start to drive a guy crazy, that’s when the problem happens and the musicians start hating each other.
“Fortunately, in the first few years after our outbreak, no one had too much self-esteem.
“It’s really easy to happen.”
He added: “There is no me, only us.”
