Start your search for top school librarians in the UAE

It will be divided into two categories, school librarians working in public (government) schools and school librarians working in private schools.

Nominations are now open for this year’s awards, which will close on November 16. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony next February.

Shumous Bin Faris, Advisor to the General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Dubai, said: “We are delighted to continue to support the School Librarian Award as we have witnessed the tangible impact of enriching students’ reading culture over the past few years.”

“Reading is the most valuable input for acquiring knowledge in various fields, broadening horizons, empowering a generation, and arming them with science and knowledge for the future.”

“Our school librarians have risen to the challenge and are finding innovative ways to instill a love of books in students and develop the next generation of readers,” she added.

The nomination period kicked off with a full day of professional development seminars for librarians.

This includes an information session with the ELF team, moderated by the chair of the jury, Dr Kristine Stewart; Assistant Professor and Information Literacy Coordinator at Zayed University, and past recipients of the School Librarian of the Year Award. It also hosts a number of breakout sessions on Wikidata.

The workshop was held at the Mohammed bin Rashid Library in Dubai.

Board Member Ibrahim AlHashemi said: “The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library is not only a home for books, but a space where the community comes together to celebrate their love of literature and draw inspiration from beautiful literature. Nominations can be made by any individual, including colleagues, principals, parents and students. Self-nominations are also welcome. Librarians will be assessed by a panel of judges through a screening process, and shortlisted nominees will be visited in their school library. All nominees will receive professional development opportunities.

Librarians who work with students under the age of 18 and are full-time employees of UAE schools are eligible for the award. Nominations must be submitted online and can be in Arabic or English. Shortlisted nominees from public and private schools will be judged based on the library’s role in the school and the wider community, according to the criteria given on the ELF Dubai website.
