High concept and pure entertainment in new season of Parallel Opera

Only in the Bay Area or New York will you find several well-known companies vying for the title of most adventurous. It’s hard to keep track of all of them. But Sum Art Director Nicole Paiement and Creative Director Brian Staufenbiel parallel opera Constantly looking for ways to make contemporary equally interesting.just announced 2022–2023 season Continuing in this pattern, works were conceived as less prestigious and more as general entertainment.

As usual there are two productions, the first is a remake with Joby Talbot and Gene Sher Mount Everest, conceived with Staufenbiel as the world’s first graphic novel in film form. Although the mo-cap of the singer’s face mixed with the flat geometric visual style of the graphic novel creates something odd, like an opera, debuted last yearwhich turned out to be very effective, thanks in part to the powerful music and lyrics.

Now, Staufenbiel intends to turn the film version into a more dramatic 360-degree immersive experience, complete with surround sound. The 70-minute animated film will be screened at Z Space from February 3-12, 2023, and audiences will be in it. Of course, the pre-recorded cast remains the same, Sasha Cooke, Nathan Granner, Kevin Burdette and Hadleigh Adams star, while Talbot’s melodious soundtrack is conducted by Paiement.

The planned brand new works are by Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell shining, of course, from the classic novel by Steven King. The production, which originated at the Minnesota Opera in 2016, has been met with great critical and general success, and has seen a series of revivals at companies across the United States, including the Colorado Opera earlier this year. The OP’s new production will be shared with the Portland Opera and Hawaiian Opera and will feature a chamber orchestra composed by Moravec. The West Coast premiere is scheduled for June 2-4 at the Yerba Buena Arts Center.

As part of a hands-on opera program for teens and families, the company is producing a new opera this month, Kenji Oh and Kelley Rourke messenger. This new commission from Opera Parallèle is a “dystopian comedy that addresses the environmental anxieties of our time, which are placing increasing psychological pressure on our younger generation.” As with all these children’s works, The youth choir is combined with professional singers in the production, which will premiere in the 2023-2024 season.
